Christmas and Slavery

During the era of slavery — there were instances where some enslaved individuals would have a day of rest while others were unfortunately forced to continue working. In certain regions, enslaved people were provided with a yule log to burn in the main house. As long as the log continued to burn, they were allowed to rest during the holiday period. Occasionally, the log would burn for an extended duration, even until the arrival of the New Year.
